Welcome the Children Project

The goal of Welcome the Children is to assist early childhood professionals to better understand diversity, appreciate cultural differences and similarities, learn strategies to support English Language Learners, and promote inclusion.

Cross Cultural Perspectives: Focus on Latin American Families This interactive session will focus on creating staff self-awareness and address how to approach cross-cultural communication with Latin American children and families in a more competent manner. Workshop goals: Increase understanding of self-culture, increase understanding of Latin American culture, and identify strategies to improve communication with families. Anti-Bias Every Day This interactive dialogue addresses anti-bias education in the early childhood setting. This session incorporates the philosophy of multicultural education while expanding to include other forms of bias, stereotypes and misinformation. Workshop goals: Increase understanding of concepts of surface and deep culture, define aspects of diversity, improve recognition of how diversity impacts children, identify the “tourist approach” and discuss how to identify and select appropriate materials. Enhancing Language Development for English Language Learners The interactive training focuses on building English proficiency among children who come from homes where another language is spoken.  Emphasis is on methods that allow for meaningful communication between all teachers and children to develop pre-literacy skills comparable to their peers. Included are the stages of new language acquisition and teaching strategies with young English language learners. Workshop Goals: Provide strategies to teach to the stages of English fluency, incorporate visual aids to support communication, and conduct informal assessments of English language learners. Building Skill Sets for Bilingual Meetings This workshop promotes effective communication between English-speaking educators and parents who speak a different language through the assistance of a bilingual interpreter.  Methods allow for better time management and understanding how the educator and interpreter can mutually support the interaction with parents and families.  Workshop Goals: Understand and adopt the 3-Step Process for interpreted meetings and know the important role of the English-speaking educator in such meetings. Building Skill Sets of Bilingual Personnel Trainings are dedicated to bilingual staff members working in an early childhood educational environment addressing their 2 primary roles. The first role is bilingual interpreting and translating with skill development tools and resources.  The second role is to teach so that children grow less dependent on home language and develop English fluency.  Workshop Goals: Provide methods and resources to better communicate between two languages and two cultural communities in an ethical manner; transition preschool children from the home language to English proficiency through meaningful strategies.  Length: 2-9 hours; Presented by Darlene J Kurtz; (kurtzdarlenej@uams.edu; 501-682-9904)

Exploring Differences within Families This interactive training will focus on family composition and explore ways to support all families.  It will address topics including differences of economic class, blended families, immigrant families, and multi-racial / multi-ethnic families.  Workshop Goals: Address the different aspects of family composition, increase understanding of how family composition affects the social/emotional development of children, enhance understanding of the unique challenges and strengths of multi-racial / multi-ethnic families, and explore strategies for supporting families.  Length: 2-6 hours; Presented by Tanya Miller (millertanyas@uams.edu; 501-682-9915)
