Welcome the Children Project

Based on U.S. Census data, the number of Latinos living in Arkansas is projected to double in the next 20 years. Child care providers have been greatly affected by this influx of families and children to the state, but providers have received little training to assist them in adapting their services for the children and their families who speak Spanish. To better serve Latino children, additional training must be provided on cultural differences, assessing children for possible developmental delays, and second language acquisition. UAMS Partners for Inclusive Communities is addressing these needs through the Welcome the Children project, funded by the Arkansas Department of Human Services, Division of Child Care and Early Childhood Education.

NEW!!   A Welcome the Children Training for Preschool Educators  NEW!!

Topic: Making the Cultural Connection: Using Real Objects in the Classroom

Join us for a 3-hour training on Thursday, November 20, 2008 from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Partners for Inclusive Communities Office in North Little Rock, Arkansas. This training supports the concept that culture and family are at the core of every child’s social and emotional development.  By creating an inclusive environment that reflects each child and family, we can avoid stereotypes and promote positive development.  This interactive session explores ways to make the connection and incorporate ideas into everyday curriculum.  Presented by Sabrina Zarco with Tanya Miller.

Please download the registration form and send it to Tanya Miller (contact information is below) by November 14, 2008. (NOTE: Seating is limited so get your form in early!) Training is provided free of charge to early childhood educators.

You may return the completed registration form as an attachment to millertanyas@uams.edu or Fax completed form to 501.526.5938 - ATTN: Tanya Miller.  Driving directions will be sent to all who receive email confirmation of their registration.
