Each summer the UAMS Medical Center Department of Volunteer Services offers teens the opportunity to participate in its summer teen volunteer program (STVP) Teens will be assigned to volunteer in various areas throughout the hospital. Guest speakers and tours of certain areas in the hospital will help students gain experience of day to day life in a major medical facility. This year’s program will be the first held in the new 540,000-square-foot, 10-level, $200 million hospital. The hospital opened on January 16, 2009, and it will be exciting for the STVP students to volunteer in this state-of-the-art facility.

The program, open to students who will be at least fifteen (15) by August 1, 2009 is competitive and requires that all students submit an application and undergo an interview with a member of the Volunteer Services Department. The application deadline is Friday, May 1, 2009.  All interviews must be completed by Friday, May 15. Applicants must provide a valid and working e-mail address in order to receive important correspondence from the Volunteer Department, including information on interview scheduling.  Final decisions will be made and students notified by Friday, May 22, 2009.

This year’s program will be divided into two sessions. Each session will be 3 weeks long and run Tuesday through Thursday. Orientation for each session will be on the first day of the session. For Session 1 Orientation will be held on Tuesday, June 23, and for Session 2 Orientation will be Tuesday, July 14. A full commitment is expected for the duration of the session for which the student is selected. Absences for family trips, camps or illnesses will be excused on an as-needed basis.

The Volunteer Services Department is anticipating another great summer with our teen volunteers – join us in “Creating Comfort, Hope, and Healing for our Patients and Families”
