How do I become a volunteer?
Prospective volunteers must complete an application and undergo an interview by a staff person of the Volunteer Services Department. Following those two steps, volunteers will be required to receive training on privacy standards, infection control and other pertinent information. How much time are volunteers asked to donate?
Volunteers are asked to make a commitment to serve at least one year in the capacity of volunteer. Additionally, volunteers are asked to serve for three consecutive hours every week on a routine schedule. This sort of commitment ensures that volunteers and staff have the ability to become comfortable in their respective roles of working together.

What current volunteer opportunities are available?
Upon interviewing with the Volunteer Services Department, a detailed list of current volunteer opportunities will be given to the prospective volunteer. Ongoing volunteer opportunities include Wayfinder (volunteer guide for lost patients or visitors), gift shop attendant in the UAMS Medical Center Gift Shop and patient care volunteer. How do I make donations of gifts to the UAMS Medical Center?
Donations in the form of new and unused clothing, toiletries, knitting, etc. are always welcome and appreciated by the Volunteer Services Staff. Will I be able to shadow a doctor or pharmacist as a volunteer?
The UAMS Medical Center Department of Volunteer Services does not offer any shadowing opportunities for volunteers.

I am under 18. Are there volunteer opportunities available for me?
There are currently no school-year volunteer opportunities for persons under the age of 18. Young adults under the age of 18 are encouraged to apply for one of the summer teen volunteer programs offered by Volunteer Services Department.

Is volunteering a good step toward getting a job at UAMS?
Volunteering for the UAMS Medical Center will not guarantee a job at the UAMS Medical Center facility. Volunteers are expected to commit to at least one year of volunteer service. Those interested in working for UAMS should contact the Human Resources Department.

I am a citizen of another country currently living the United States. Am I eligible to volunteer?
United States citizenship is not required to volunteer. We have a variety of volunteers with unique and diverse cultural backgrounds. Individuals who do not have proper work authorization may be in violation of their visa status even by performing volunteer service.

What benefits are there for volunteering?
There are many intangible benefits that volunteers receive, such as knowing she/he has impacted the life of UAMS patients, families and visitors. However, there are some tangible benefits from volunteer service:
- Volunteers learn the layout of the UAMS campus which could make health-care needs for themselves and family members easier in the future.
- Volunteers develop professional skills that could aid in personal career development.
- Volunteers are trained in up-to-date safety and privacy standards.
- Volunteers receive discounts on meals pursuant to the number of hours they volunteer.
- Volunteers receive free Tuberculosis screening yearly.
- Volunteers receive free annual flu shots.
- Volunteers learn of community and social functions as they relate to the hospital and are welcome to attend various presentations or training events.
- Volunteers have the opportunity to become involved with volunteer groups on campus such as the UAMS Medical Center Auxiliary.
- Volunteers receive recognition for the services they provide as appropriate.

When is the next Aromatique sale?
While the Volunteer Services Department handles the annual Aromatique sale, information on upcoming sales will only be released via the UAMS announcements and in marketing materials posted throughout campus.

What are the requirements to volunteer?
All volunteers must be at least 18 years old (with the exception of summer young adult volunteer programs); have a current (within the past year) tuberculin skin test; undergo an interview with Volunteer Services staff; receive proper orientation and training; and follow all policies and procedures of the UAMS Medical Center.
