Two UAMS Physicians Receive Prestigious Psychiatry Awards

LITTLE ROCK – Robert Jarvis, M.D., and John Spollen, M.D., of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) have received prestigious national awards from the Association for Academic Psychiatry.

Jarvis, chief resident in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the UAMS College of Medicine, received the association’s Bristol-Myers Squibb Fellowship, which provides two years of funding for membership and attendance at association meetings and mentoring by association members. Only five psychiatry residents in the nation receive the fellowship each year. The program is supported by an educational grant of the Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Division.

Spollen, an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, received the association’s GlaxoSmithKline Junior Faculty Development Award, which includes reimbursement for attending the association’s annual meeting. Only six academic psychiatrists in the nation receive the award each year. The award is made possible by a grant from GlaxoSmithKline, Inc.

The association presented the awards to Jarvis and Spollen at its annual meeting Oct. 1-3 in Philadelphia.
