JUNE 11, 2007 | Richard Zraick, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology of the UAMS College of Health Related Professions, has been invited to co-author the next edition of the leading textbook on voice disorders.

Zraick will join co-authors Daniel Boone, Stephen McFarlane and Shelly von Berg, on the eighth edition of the textbook The Voice and Voice Therapy, which will be available in fall 2009. The text has been the most widely used in the field of voice disorders for more than 35 years, currently commanding 65 percent of the market, said Thomas Guyette, Ph.D., professor and chairman of the Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology.

“This is a textbook used all over the world and it’s an exciting opportunity for Dr. Zraick to share his knowledge,” Guyette said. “At the same time, his participation emphasizes the quality of faculty we have in our department, which benefits both our students and the patients we see.”

Zraick, who joined the UAMS faculty in 1997, is an expert in voice disorders, particularly in adults. His research interests include neurologically-based communication disorders, such as those caused by strokes that affect a person’s ability to talk, as well as clinical skills training for speech pathology students.

In addition to his CHRP appointment, Zraick is an assistant professor in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery of the UAMS College of Medicine. There he works with the team in the Voice and Swallowing Center.

The UAMS audiology and speech pathology program is operated jointly with the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
