DEC. 13, 2001 | The second gala dinner of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Society of the Double Helix was a festive night for the leading supporters of Arkansas’s academic health center.

Following dinner at the Little Rock Country Club on Dec. 6, the university recognized 23 new members of the society. Each has given at least $100,000 to UAMS to support education, research, or patient care. Since establishing the society in 1998, the university has honored 209 donors with membership.

Jerome H. Atchley of Little Rock, chair of the Foundation Fund Board of the Arkansas Cancer Research Center, one of the clinical centers at UAMS, delivered remarks on “Philanthropy: The Heart of Human Greatness.”

Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson, M.D., and Hugh Hart Pollard of Little Rock, chair of the Recognition Committee of the UAMS Foundation Fund Board, acknowledged each new member at the dinner and presented them with a replica of the bronze sculpture of the society’s symbol, which stands outside Ward Tower of University Hospital.

Since its discovery in 1953, the double helix structure of the DNA molecule has become a symbol of the quest for knowledge through scientific research. The spiral ribbons and ladder-like crossbars are often metaphorically compared to pathways to future discovery or success.

The menu for the dinner included
lobster bisque with dry sack sherry and puff pastry dome; fresh garden greens, sliced apples, feta cheese, shallot and spiced pecans with Dijon vinaigrette dressing; lemon intermezzo; tenderloin of beef with cabernet wine sauce; duchess potatoes, sauteed spinach, and baby squash; and the special Double Helix dessert.

Dr. Adam VanWright of the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, the Hon. Josetta Wilkins, Ph. D., and Ernie Ferris, M.D., chatted before the dinner.

Executive Vice Chancellor John P. Shock, M.D., chatted with Bob Pugh of Portland, Betty Jo Ward, and Jo Ann Pugh of Portland.
