Helping children cope with traumatic events – such as the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, D.C. – will be the topic of a free community program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Tues., Sept. 25, 2001.
Teresa L. Kramer, Ph.D., of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences in the College of Medicine, will discuss “Violence and Its Impact: Coping after a Crisis” in a 90 minute program that will be open to the public. She will emphasize how to cope with the Sept. 11 attacks. Dr. Kramer is a clinical psychologist, assistant professor, and National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) research career awardee.
She also will discuss the epidemiology, neurobiology, and current understanding of post traumatic stress disorder.
The NIMH provides information about PTSD on its web site.
The program will be 5:30 – 7 p.m. in Education Building III, Room G225, on the UAMS campus. (See campus map here.) Participants will receive stickers good for free parking in the campus parking deck.
Several hospitals and other locations around the state will provide television hook-ups so that local residents can listen and ask questions during the program.
