Coronary Artery Surgery

Home

These segments explore coronary artery surgery.

Heart surgeon Gareth Tobler, M.D., assistant professor of cardiothoracic surgery in the University of Arkansas For Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine and chief of cardiothoracic surgery in the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS), is the guest on the programs. Cardiopulmonary bypass surgery, which keeps the patient alive with the use of a heart/lung machine while evacuating blood from the heart, has been the standard coronary artery surgery since the early 1970s, but does have drawbacks. Dr. Tobler describes the latest off-pump technique that allows him to operate successfully on a heart as it pumps.
