NOV. 24, 2004 | An aerial photograph of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) campus was featured on the cover of the November 2004 issue of the international journal Academic Medicine.

The magazine also features a page noting that UAMS’ College of Medicine is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. The cover note includes a short history of the institution’s founding as a tiny outpost of the forerunner of the University of Arkansas.

Today, the college has 25 departments and has graduated more than 7,000 physicians. The magazine also highlights one of UAMS’ newest buildings, the 12-story Jackson T. Stephens Spine and Neurosciences Institute, which opened in 2003.

“It is nice for UAMS to garner high-profile attention from among the medical education community,” said UAMS Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson, M.D. “Appearing on the cover of an international medical journal further raises awareness to our peers of the world-class facilities we have here at UAMS.”

Academic Medicine, a peer-reviewed monthly journal, serves as an international forum for the exchange of ideas and information about policy, issues and research concerning academic medicine, including strengthening the quality of medical education and training, enhancing the search for biomedical knowledge, advancing research in health services and integrating education and research into the provision of effective health care.
