LITTLE ROCK – The Departments of Dermatology and Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) are offering a free skin cancer screening for the public Friday, Sept. 10, from noon to 5 p.m. in the sixth floor of the Arkansas Cancer Research Center on the UAMS campus.
To make an appointment, call (501) 686-6363 or (501) 686-8181. Visitors should expect a brief wait. For a small fee, parking will be available in the Outpatient Center parking deck on the corner of Cedar Street and Capitol Avenue. The free screening is co-sponsored by Bene Vita, Loca Luna Restaurant and Consolidated Arkansas Restaurant Industries.
The American Academy of Dermatology estimates more than 1 million new cases of skin cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year. “Many people liken sun exposure today to what smoking was many years ago,” said Daniel Davis, M.D., a dermatologist at UAMS. “Now people are beginning to realize that the sun can have tremendous side effects on the human body, most notably causing skin cancer.”
UAMS is the state’s only comprehensive academic health center, with five colleges, a graduate school, a medical center, five centers of excellence and a statewide network of regional centers. The school has about 2,170 students and 650 residents and is the state’s largest public employer with almost 9,000 employees. UAMS and its affiliates have an economic impact in Arkansas of about $3.8 billion a year.
UAMS centers of excellence are the Arkansas Cancer Research Center, Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute, Donald W. Reynolds Center on Aging, Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy and Jackson T. Stephens Spine and Neurosciences Institute. |
