MARCH 30, 2005 | The first “meeting” of an international student interest group in obstetrics and gynecology took place March 23 at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Public Health and Volgograd Medical University (VMU) in Russia.

Using Internet video, UAMS third-year medical students and VMU medical students and residents compared structures of clerkship, preceptorship and residency programs, post-doctoral fellowships, tuition and training costs and class diversity. They also discussed cultural attitudes to women’s health and family planning, such as management of unwanted pregnancies and acceptance of contraceptives.

UAMS students explained their early experiences in developing practical skills in patient care, including minor surgical procedures. VMU students discussed the Russian Student Scientific Society, which is hosting a conference to demonstrate student research in obstetrics and gynecology.

The UAMS Regional Programs-Area Health Education Centers and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the UAMS College of Medicine co-sponsored the event.

Faculty advisors are Katrina Davis, M.D., assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology; Lee Lee Doyle, M.D., professor emeritus of obstetrics and gynecology; and Yvonne Lewis, Ed.D., assistant director of the AHEC program. Russian language interpretation was provided by Angelina Levitskaya, UAMS Regional Programs.

Since 1993, VMU has requested outreach assistance from UAMS Regional Programs to strengthen Russian primary care education using a model similar to Arkansas’ network of Area Health Education Centers. This year the program expanded to include reproductive health, family planning and obstetrics and gynecology.  Exchanges to both universities are funded by federal grants to UAMS from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and the American International Health Alliance (AIHA).

Internet video is a cost-effective way of extending collaboration between the medical universities beyond the terms of the USAID/AIHA support. The next internet video meeting will be held in May, when four UAMS faculty will be in Volgograd to conduct workshops on reproductive health, family planning and obstetrics and gynecology. Interested students may contact Davis or Doyle.
