Research to Prevent Blindness has given a total of $1,302,500 since 1990 to the Department of Ophthalmology in the UAMS College of Medicine. “Research to Prevent Blindness has been an integral partner in the development of our research program. Research is an important aspect of our eye institute, and we appreciate Research to Prevent Blindness’ confidence in our program,” John P. Shock, M.D., professor and chairman of the ophthalmology department and director of the Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute, said. The grant will support basic and clinical eye research by the UAMS Department of Ophthalmology in the Pat and Willard Walker Eye Research Center, located in Jones Eye Institute, Arkansas Children’s Hospital and the John L. McClellan Memorial Veterans Hospital. Richard Dix, Ph.D., is director of the Walker Eye Research Center and a professor in the Department of Ophthalmology. “Our research center is growing with the development of exciting projects involving the interaction of viruses with the eye, and we expect major breakthroughs in the fight against blindness within the coming months and years,” Dix said. Since it was founded in 1960, Research to Prevent Blindness has channeled hundreds of millions of dollars to medical institutions throughout the United States for research into all blinding diseases.
