NOV. 15, 2001 | The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) joined a tribute today, National Philanthropy Day, to the late Arkansas philanthropist Col. T. H. Barton of El Dorado.

Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson, M.D., commented, “UAMS is greatly indebted to Col. Barton as well as [to] Elizabeth Pruet, and Johnie and Charles Murphy [of El Dorado].  Beginning a long history of Union County support for UAMS, Col. Barton and Mrs. Barton were the major contributors to the Barton Biomedical Research Building in the late 1950s. It was the first building other than classroom and administrative buildings constructed on the current medical school campus. Life-saving research continues in the building today.  For others to follow, someone must  lead. We at UAMS are grateful for the philanthropic example set by the Bartons, and to the people of Union County for their legacy of generosity.” (Learn more about current research at UAMS.)
