Sept. 14, 2005 \| M. Gazi Yasargil, M.D., professor of neurosurgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine, was honored by his peers during the 13^th Annual World Congress of Neurological Surgery held June 19-24 in Marrakech, Morocco. The recipient of the first-ever Golden Neuron Award, Yasargil was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the field of neurosurgery. Born in Turkey in 1925, Yasargil received his education in Zurich, Switzerland, and served as professor and chairman of the Department of Neurology at the University of Zurich from 1973 -1992. In 1994, Yasargil moved to the United States to join the staff of UAMS. Yasargil’s contributions to the field of neurosurgery include the development of precise tools for use in exploration of the brain, including the Yasargil aneurysm clips, the self-retaining brain retractor and the mobile micro mirror. He is also known for creating a floating microscope with a mouth switch, enabling surgeons to perform procedures using both hands. Among Yasargil’s other awards and achievements are being selected “Man of the Century 1950-2000” by Neurosurgery, the official journal of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He also has been named a distinguished faculty scholar at UAMS and has received the Gold Medal of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies and the European Association of Neurological Surgeons Medal of Honor. The World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, now in its 50^th year, hosts the World Congress of Neurological Surgery every four years and includes more than 4,000 practitioners and decision makers from five continents. Sept. 14, 2005 \| M. Gazi Yasargil, M.D., professor of neurosurgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine, was honored by his peers during the 13^th Annual World Congress of Neurological Surgery held June 19-24 in Marrakech, Morocco. The recipient of the first-ever Golden Neuron Award, Yasargil was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the field of neurosurgery. Born in Turkey in 1925, Yasargil received his education in Zurich, Switzerland, and served as professor and chairman of the Department of Neurology at the University of Zurich from 1973 -1992. In 1994, Yasargil moved to the United States to join the staff of UAMS. Yasargil’s contributions to the field of neurosurgery include the development of precise tools for use in exploration of the brain, including the Yasargil aneurysm clips, the self-retaining brain retractor and the mobile micro mirror. He is also known for creating a floating microscope with a mouth switch, enabling surgeons to perform procedures using both hands. Among Yasargil’s other awards and achievements are being selected “Man of the Century 1950-2000” by Neurosurgery, the official journal of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He also has been named a distinguished faculty scholar at UAMS and has received the Gold Medal of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies and the European Association of Neurological Surgeons Medal of Honor. The World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, now in its 50^th year, hosts the World Congress of Neurological Surgery every four years and includes more than 4,000 practitioners and decision makers from five continents.
