The latest is a series of bimonthly seminars called the First Annual Seminar Update in Cardiovascular Diseases. The Division of Cardiology is hosting six sessions in 2005-2006 that will provide information on emerging issues in cardiovascular medicine. The material is geared to family practice physicians, nurse practitioners, critical care professionals and any other allied health professionals who work with cardiovascular diseases. Cardiologists on the UAMS campus will share their knowledge with health care providers in rural areas using state-of-the-art interactive video conferencing. The conferences are being offered through UAMS’ seven Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) and participating rural hospitals. “Since cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 cause of morbidity and mortality in the nation, special interest should be focused in that field to improve health care,” said Ibrahim Elias Fahdi, M.D., assistant professor of Internal Medicine and director of Cardiac Telemedicine. Julie Hall-Barrow, Ed.D., associate director of the UAMS Rural Hospital Program, said day-long distance-learning cardiology programs have been offered in the past, but not on the level of the continuing education series now being offered. Barrow said the series of seminars shows how UAMS continues to take advantage of its interactive video for both clinical and educational purposes. Telemedical Communications is part of a video network made up of various institutions and campuses throughout the state. About 278 Compressed Interactive Video sites are operating within the state. The medical network of compressed interactive video consists of 64 sites, including 54 rural hospitals and seven AHECs. The UAMS network is capable of connecting to other states and countries throughout the world. Besides cardiology, UAMS has used its network in areas of high risk OB/Gyn, psychiatry, dietetics, dermatology, genetics, orthopaedics, psychology, pharmacy, prenatal and speech pathology. The latest is a series of bimonthly seminars called the First Annual Seminar Update in Cardiovascular Diseases. The Division of Cardiology is hosting six sessions in 2005-2006 that will provide information on emerging issues in cardiovascular medicine. The material is geared to family practice physicians, nurse practitioners, critical care professionals and any other allied health professionals who work with cardiovascular diseases. Cardiologists on the UAMS campus will share their knowledge with health care providers in rural areas using state-of-the-art interactive video conferencing. The conferences are being offered through UAMS’ seven Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) and participating rural hospitals. “Since cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 cause of morbidity and mortality in the nation, special interest should be focused in that field to improve health care,” said Ibrahim Elias Fahdi, M.D., assistant professor of Internal Medicine and director of Cardiac Telemedicine. Julie Hall-Barrow, Ed.D., associate director of the UAMS Rural Hospital Program, said day-long distance-learning cardiology programs have been offered in the past, but not on the level of the continuing education series now being offered. Barrow said the series of seminars shows how UAMS continues to take advantage of its interactive video for both clinical and educational purposes. Telemedical Communications is part of a video network made up of various institutions and campuses throughout the state. About 278 Compressed Interactive Video sites are operating within the state. The medical network of compressed interactive video consists of 64 sites, including 54 rural hospitals and seven AHECs. The UAMS network is capable of connecting to other states and countries throughout the world. Besides cardiology, UAMS has used its network in areas of high risk OB/Gyn, psychiatry, dietetics, dermatology, genetics, orthopaedics, psychology, pharmacy, prenatal and speech pathology.
