DEC. 19, 2000 \| The College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) celebrated the investiture of the Robert Watson, M.D., Endowed Chair in Neurological Surgery on Dec. 12. President B. Alan Sugg, Ph.D., of the University of Arkansas System, UAMS Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson, M.D., and John Shock, M.D., interim dean of the College of Medicine, formally invested Dr. Al-Mefty as the inaugural chair holder. In spite of very cold weather, approximately 200 friends, family members, and colleagues of Dr. Watson and Dr. Al-Mefty attended the ceremony in Sam Walton Auditorium at the Arkansas Cancer Research Center (ACRC) on the UAMS campus. They mingled afterwards at a reception in the Betsy Blass Board Room at ACRC. The chair honors the life and legacy of Dr. Watson (1908-1994), the first neurosurgeon in Arkansas and an enduring inspiration to those who followed him in the specialty. Dr. Watson was a member of the UAMS College of Medicine faculty from 1942 until his retirement in 1983. Ossama Al-Mefty, M.D., F.A.C.S., professor and chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at UAMS, became the first holder of the Watson Chair.Dr. Al-Mefty is internationally recognized as a pioneer in skull base surgery and an innovator in surgical techniques. W. Ray Jouett, M.D., associate clinical professor in the Department of Neurosurgery from 1965 to 1995, and George L. Ackerman, M.D., emeritus professor of medicine at UAMS, delivered tributes to Dr. Watson. Dr. Watson's widow, Pauline Lindsey “PLD” Davis Watson, responded to the tributes on behalf of the Watson family.
