LITTLE ROCK – The Cancer Control Department of the Arkansas Cancer Research Center (ACRC) at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has been awarded a grant of $60,000 by the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) Minority Sub-recipient Grant Office. The grant will fund cancer prevention programs conducted by locally run Cancer Councils in Mississippi, Phillips and St. Francis counties. The mission of the Cancer Councils is to provide community-based, tobacco-related cancer education and prevention programs. This is the second year of funding from UAPB for the Cancer Councils. “We are honored to have our Cancer Councils recognized by UAPB for an additional year. The service that they provide to their local communities in regard to cancer prevention and awareness is unsurpassed,” said Ronda Henry-Tillman, M.D., director of the ACRC Cancer Control Department and associate professor of surgery in the UAMS College of Medicine. UAMS is the state’s only comprehensive academic health center, with five colleges, a graduate school, a medical center, five centers of excellence and a statewide network of regional centers. UAMS has about 2,200 students and 660 residents and is the state’s largest public employer with almost 9,000 employees. UAMS and its affiliates have an economic impact in Arkansas of $4.3 billion a year. UAMS centers of excellence are the Arkansas Cancer Research Center, Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute, Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging, Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy and Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute.
