LITTLE ROCK, AR- Ask any science teacher, making science exciting for kids can be a challenge. 
       A gallery-like exhibit of graphics entitled “The Molecules of Life, ” in the Biomedical Research Center at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) was designed with kids in mind. The show is on display now through June 30.
       Two researchers at UAMS have found a way to make science come alive through computer visualization. Cesar Compadre, Ph.D., and R. Lilia Compadre, Ph.D., a husband and wife team, have transformed images of selected molecules through magnification one billion times larger than actual size. The images show remarkable color and beauty. Each image stands about six feet tall and three feet wide. They are scientifically accurate and appeal to the eye as artwork.  Each of the seven molecular images is mounted on an easel with a brief description of the molecule that children and non-scientists can understand and enjoy. 
       “The Molecules of Life”  exhibit is on display in the 2nd floor atrium of the Biomedical Research Center Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. During the week of June 22- June 26, a guide will be at the exhibit from 4:30-6 p.m. to explain the technology and answer questions. Patrons can park on Elm Street across from the Arkansas Cancer Research Center on the UAMS campus at 4301 W. Markham Street.
       After this showing, “UAMS will make the exhibit available at no charge for presentation at schools and science fairs in central Arkansas (Pulaski and contiguous counties) during the 1998-99 academic year,” said the Compadres. “Our hope is that kids will consider science ‘cool’ and will pursue science classes in school with enthusiasm and curiosity.” This initial presentation of “The Molecules of Life” exhibit is a part of the Wildwood Festival Fringe and celebration of the arts during the Wildwood Festival in Little Rock.
