These segments explore strength training and nutrition for aging reversal.

William J. Evans, Ph.D., a researcher at the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Aging at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), describes his "Astrofit" plan for wellness. The program emphasizes the weight-lowering phase of strength training and a high-carbohydrate diet.

Dr. Evans is director of the Nutrition, Metabolism and Exercise Laboratory at the center. He has done research for NASA on how astronauts can regain strength after spending time in outer space, where the limited gravity has a negative effect on muscle strength. Dr. Evans has developed a similar wellness program to reduce or reverse the effects of aging and explains it in a new book, Astrofit (Simon and Schuster, 2002).

These programs were first broadcast June 17-21, 2002.
