NOV. 29, 2001 | The state has approved the first two programs in the new College of Public Health at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).
The Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board approved programs for a Master of Public Health and a Post-baccalaureate Certificate of Public Health in October.
The college is accepting applications now and will begin offering courses in January. (See the admission requirements.)
|
| |
”With the establishment of a new College of Public Health at this time, Arkansas has the chance to be on the cutting edge of public health practice,” Thomas A. Bruce, M.D., dean pro tem of the college, commented. The college will involve local community agencies as partners in instruction, field work, and course design, reflecting current best practice at the nation’s top schools of public health. This collaboration will build upon the existing Hometown Health Initiative of the Arkansas Department of Health.
”The College of Public Health belongs to the people of Arkansas and it will strive to …[serve] as the crossroads for the exchange of ideas and best public health practices,” Dean Bruce said.
In their proposal for the degree programs, planners of the new college noted that “Arkansans are among the least healthy people in the United States” and argued that the state needs professionals who can assess and promote public health and develop policy. They specifically noted that it isn’t health education alone that needs greater attention in Arkansas, since most Arkansans are aware that it is unhealthy to smoke, eat a high-fat diet, and avoid exercise. The state needs new approaches to helping Arkansans change unhealthy lifestyles.
The certificate and master’s programs will include the courses required by the Council on Education in Public Health, the national accrediting body for schools of public health. The certificate program consists of the 18 core courses necessary to obtain the master’s degree.
Dean Bruce is leading the college until appointment of the first permanent dean. He was dean of the UAMS College of Medicine in 1974-1985. Joseph W. Thompson, M.D., M.P.H., is assistant dean pro tem.
Public health leaders around Arkansas are acting as chairs pro tem of the college’s academic departments:
