Free Workshops on Lead-Safe Practices to be Held in North Little Rock on Jan. 21, 26 LITTLE ROCK – A coalition of public health advocates that includes the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), will host a pair of free workshops this month in North Little Rock on reducing health risks associated with lead-based paint, targeting parents along with contractors who are renovating old homes.	LITTLE ROCK – Michael D. Smith, a Russellville pharmacist, is the first recipient of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Pharmacy Dean’s Award for Service to the College. He is co-owner of Rose Drug of Russellville and is a partner in Rose Drug of Dover and Berry Drug of Dardanelle. Smith was honored with the award during the UAMS College of Pharmacy senior awards convocation in May. He is the founding president of the College of Pharmacy’s Alumni Association, created in 2003. Smith has served as president of the Arkansas Pharmacists Association and is a past president of the Russellville Downtown Rotary Club, past district chairman of the Mount Magazine Boy Scouts of America, past president of the Shelter of Sunshine (home for neglected and abused children), and past board member of the Greater Russellville Chamber of Commerce. He also serves as trustee, treasurer, adult Sunday school teacher and musician of the New Life United Pentecostal Church of Alma. UAMS is the state’s only comprehensive academic health center, with five colleges, a graduate school, a medical center, five centers of excellence and a statewide network of regional centers. UAMS has about 2,200 students and 660 residents and is the state’s largest public employer with almost 9,000 employees. UAMS and its affiliates have an economic impact in Arkansas of $4.1 billion a year. UAMS centers of excellence are the Arkansas Cancer Research Center, Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute, Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging, Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy and Jackson T. Stephens Spine & Neurosciences Institute.
