Research to Prevent Blindness Gives Walker Eye Research Center $110,000
| JAN. 9, 2003 | The organization Research to Prevent Blindness (RPB) has given $110,000 to the Pat and Willard Walker Eye Research Center at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) for research into the causes, treatment and prevention of blinding diseases, raising its total gifts to UAMS to almost $1.2 million.
"The generous support of Research to Prevent Blindness has allowed us to continue innovative research on many diseases of the eye that cause vision loss and blindness. These research efforts will eventually lead to new ways to diagnose and treat these sight-threatening diseases," Richard D. Dix, Ph.D., director of the Pat and Willard Walker Eye Research Center, said. Part of the Department of Ophthalmology in the College of Medicine, the center conducts research in several areas of basic science involving the eye, including infectious diseases, immunology, genetics and pharmacology.

Unrestricted gifts from Research to Prevent Blindness are integral to the Department of Ophthalmology and "contribute significantly to the quality and reputation of the research efforts of the faculty," Dr. Dix said.
Research to Prevent Blindness is the world’s leading voluntary organization supporting eye research. Since it began in 1960, RPB has channeled hundreds of millions of dollars to medical institutions throughout the United States for research into all blinding eye diseases.
