Professor of Anatomy Restores Rare Books in Honor of Colleagues
Gilmore presents gift for restoring rare books in UAMS Library in honor of colleagues.

OCT. 18, 2001 | Professor Shirley Gilmore, Ph.D., who recently retired from the Department of Anatomy after 39 years on the faculty, has honored two colleagues with tribute gifts to restore rare books in the UAMS Library.

Dr. Gilmore made gifts to restore the books in honor of Florence Char, M.D., and Daisilee H. Berry, M.D., both professor emerita of the Department of Pediatrics.

Thanks to Dr. Gilmore’s contribution, the UAMS Historical Research Center (HRC) will be able to restore rare copies

The College of Medicine honored Dr. Gilmore, professor and chair of the Department of Anatomy, at a reception Sept. 21. Dr. Gilmore’s teaching responsibilities have been primarily in medical neuroscience, anatomy for seniors and residents in orthopaedic surgery and in obstetrics and gynecology, and regional gross anatomy electives for seniors. She has been director of the Arkansas Center for Neuroscience and has served as a consultant to or member of review or advisory committees for the National Research Council and the National Institute of Mental Health, and as chair of the Neurology A Study Section of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Gilmore’s research focus has been maturation of the spinal cord, response of the spinal cord to injury, and its ability to recover from injury.

The Historical Research Center invites other faculty members and alumni to make tribute and memorial gifts for the preservation of rare books in the HRC collection. Contact Margaret A. Johnson, M.L.S., chair of the HRC (501-686-6733).
