The teen-ager, the second to receive the heart pump, is now the longest survivor after receiving the device.

NOV. 30, 2001 | Pat and Willard Walker and their family, of Springdale, Ark., have made a gift of $1.1 million to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) to endow a chair in orthopaedic surgery.
“Pat and Willard Walker’s family is one of the leading philanthropic families of Arkansas. We are profoundly grateful for their generosity,” Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson, M.D., said.
The Walker family made the gift to the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery in the College of Medicine. Carl L. Nelson, M.D., is chairman of the department.
”Pat and Willard Walker have made it possible for us to continue improving the lives of individuals who suffer from debilitating injuries or orthopaedic conditions. Their gift will support medical education, residency training, and clinical care in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery,” Dr. Nelson said.
The department has helped thousands of Arkansans with joint replacements, treatment of hip fractures, severe injuries including sports injuries, degenerative diseases of the spine, surgery of the hand and foot, and treatment of bone cancer.
The department provides residency training in geriatric orthopaedic surgery, hand and upper extremity surgery, and hip and knee surgery. Its faculty perform cutting edge surgical procedures at University Hospital. The department also conducts research in many areas of orthopaedic surgery, including stem cell therapy for osteoarthritis and spine stabilization. |

The Walkers have made previous gifts to UAMS, including contributions of approximately $8 million to the university’s Arkansas Cancer Research Center (ACRC). The university named the Pat and Willard Walker Tower, the ACRC home on the campus, in recognition of those gifts. The Walkers also contributed to the Carl L. Nelson, M.D., Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery and to the Kent Westbrook, M.D., Director’s Chair in the ACRC.
Many Arkansans have supported UAMS by creating endowments so as to provide ongoing income for the institution. Endowed chairs are both honorary academic appointments for individual faculty members and funds to support the work of an academic department or the work of the designated chairholder.
