Osceola Native Receives White Lab Coat at Special Ceremony for First-Year UAMS Medical Students

Home
LITTLE ROCK – Lisa Blair Coburn of Osceola, Ark., a first-year student in the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), recently participated in the ninth annual White Coat Ceremony. The college held the ceremony Aug. 7 at Robinson Auditorium in Little Rock to present its 150 freshmen with the short, white lab coats they will wear during their four years of medical school. After Coburn and her classmates donned their new coats, they recited the Medical Student Oath. This oath is a promise of compassion, cooperation and ethical behavior in the practice of medicine. E. Albert Reece, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., the dean of the UAMS College of Medicine, encouraged students to strive to meet five objectives: to put the interests of their patients above their own; to provide a level of care that meets the highest possible standards of the profession; to respect the values, culture, autonomy and dignity of all patients; to honor patient confidentiality; and to work collaboratively and respectfully with other health care providers. At the end of the students’ four years of medical school, they will trade their short white jackets for the longer white coats worn by practicing physicians during their medical residencies.
