Orthopaedic Surgery Resident To Receive Community Service Award
Orthopaedic Surgery Resident Sparks will receive the M. Joycelyn Elders, M.D., Award for Community Service from the UAMS College of Medicine later this month.

NOV. 8, 2001 | A resident in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery of the College of Medicine will receive the M. Joycelyn Elders, M.D., Award for Community Service from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) later this month.

Charisse Y. Sparks, M.D., will accept the award at a ceremony on Tues., Nov. 20.

Dr. Sparks has volunteered in numerous ways as a mentor and tutor for minority students from junior high to medical school. Carl L. Nelson, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and Andrew D. Markiewitz, M.D., chief of hand and upper extremity surgery in the department, nominated Dr. Sparks for the award.

 ”Dr. Charisse Sparks … has shown continued involvement … to encourage minority students to achieve their dreams. … [She is] an ideal example for all communities,” Dr. Nelson wrote.

Dr. Sparks earned her medical degree from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. She has received several awards and honors as a medical student, including the Lose Scholarship for Outstanding Academic Achievement and Excellence in Community Service.

Dr. Elders is professor emeritus of pediatrics in the UAMS College of Medicine. She was the U.S. Surgeon General in 1993-1994. She established the award to recognize a resident or fellow who has made significant contributions to community health. The award includes a $1,000 prize.
