JUNE 11, 2004 \| Robert E. McGehee Jr., Ph.D., said he wants to “razzle-dazzle” prospective UAMS graduate students. Recruiting potential students is just one of the goals he hopes to accomplish as the new dean of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Graduate School. A long-time faculty member at UAMS, McGehee became dean of the Graduate School on June 1. He replaces Dean Richard H. Kennedy, Ph.D., who has accepted a position at Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago. McGehee wears many hats at UAMS. In addition to becoming the new dean of the Graduate School, he is also an associate professor of pediatrics, physiology and biophysics, and pathology in the UAMS College of Medicine and director of Basic Science Research in the Division of Neonatology in the Department of Pediatrics and Arkansas Children’s Hospital. He is also a member of the Arkansas Cancer Research Center. When he isn’t working, McGehee enjoys some favorite Arkansas pastimes – hunting, fishing and boating. McGehee said he has always had an interest in the Graduate School because of his involvement with the program. He has taught graduate courses, trained graduate students and he has helped develop graduate courses. “I am dedicated to and vested in this institution because UAMS is my alma mater and Arkansas is my home state, and I’m committed to making our graduate program the best that it can be,” he said. One goal he has for the program is attracting more students from Arkansas. He plans to visit colleges in Arkansas to recruit students. “I really want to sell our program to Arkansas,” he said. “I want to offer in-depth tours of the program to select students and I really want to ‘wow’ them.” McGehee is also excited about the new interdisciplinary biomedical science program that is scheduled to be offered in the Graduate School in 2005. “I also would like to work with all of the colleges at UAMS to develop an interdisciplinary program that would allow more individualized training for students.” A Pine Bluff native, McGehee earned his Ph.D. in physiology and biophysics at UAMS and did his postgraduate fellowship training at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital before returning to UAMS, where he has been a faculty member since 1993. McGehee lives in Little Rock with his wife of 20 years, Kay, and their son, 9.
