NOV. 1, 2001 | Arkansas’s incoming dean of medicine, a Philadelphia specialist in high-risk pregnancy, stopped by the state’s only high-risk pregnancy program recently, meeting physicians and greeting patients.

E. Albert Reece, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., the new dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) visited the labor and delivery ward of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) Medical Center last week with Carl V. Smith, M.D., chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

UAMS Medical Center is home to the only high-risk pregnancy program in Arkansas. These board certified physicians in maternal and fetal medicine are trained and experienced in helping pregnant women avoid risks associated with a wide range of diseases or conditions, including diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, asthma, lupus, epilepsy, lung disease, kidney disease, RH negative blood, herpes, and HIV. Curtis L. Lowery, M.D., is director of the Maternal and Fetal Medicine Division of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Reece will become dean of medicine full-time in January 2002. He is currently chairman of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. During monthly visits, he is meeting with faculty, staff, and students at UAMS to become familiar with the college he will lead.

Lowery, M.D., director of the Maternal and Fetal Medicine Division of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, developed the device with a grant from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Eswaran is a research assistant professor at the Graduate Institute of Technology at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He is collaborating with Dr. Lowery on the SARA project.
