SEPT. 20, 2001 | The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) offers a variety of distance learning opportunities, as the incoming dean of medicine learned on a recent visit to the campus.
Faculty and staff briefed E. Albert Reece, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., on compressed video and Internet-based teaching earlier this month. Dr. Reece will become the full-time dean of the College of Medicine in January. He is currently chairman of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive sciences at Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia.
Carl Smith, M.D., chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB-GYN), and others talked with Dr. Reece about UAMS’s telemedicine conferences, which connect physicians and other health care providers around the state with experts at UAMS for regular consultations on high-risk pregnancy cases and other topics.
They also demonstrated an Internet-based course in the College of Health Related Professions (CHRP) and discussed how to adapt the genetics information in the course for medical students. The course, in CHRP’s Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program, is on advanced obstetrical sonography, genetics, and pathology. (See a sample module of the online course.)
The College of Pharmacy and College of Nursing also offer various online courses. See more information here.
In addition to Dr. Smith, the following persons met with Dean Reece: Paul Wendel, M.D., clerkship director in the Department of OB-GYN; Terry DuBose, program director in the sonography program; Shannon Barringer, MS, CGC, supervisor of genetic counselors; Katherine Icke, MS, director of teratogen information services; and Becky Butler, LCSW, coordinator of telegenetics for the Department of OB-GYN.
