What is a Nasal Fracture?

A nasal fracture (frak-shur) is also called a broken nose. Common ways of breaking your nose are playing sports, falling down, or by running into something. Your nose and face may hurt, feel numb, or tingly. Your nose may be swollen, bruised, or bleeding. If the break pushed the bones out of place, your nose may be a different shape. Do not push on the broken bone while it is healing.

*You may need an x-ray depending on how bad the break is. But, sometimes x-rays of the nose do not show a nasal fracture right away even if there is one. Caregivers may want to wait 1 to 4 days after the injury or until the swelling has gone down to take an x-ray. Packing may be put in your nose to help stop bleeding. A small fracture usually heals in about 6 weeks. A bad fracture may need surgery after the swelling has gone down.

CARE AGREEMENT:

You have the right to help plan your care. To help with this plan, you must learn about your health condition and how it may be treated. You can then discuss treatment options with your caregivers. Work with them to decide what care may be used to treat you. You always have the right to refuse treatment.
