LITTLE ROCK – Renowned glass artist James Hayes, an Arkansas native whose work has been shown at numerous exhibitions throughout the country, will have the largest permanent collection of his artistry ever displayed with the opening of the Psychiatric Research Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).

NOV. 29, 2001 | The medical community in Arkansas recently celebrated creation of an endowment for pediatric facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.
The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) formally installed Milton Waner, M.D., a specialist in correcting deformities in children’s faces, as the first Benjamin and Milton Waner, M.D., Chair in Pediatric Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Dr. Waner is a professor in the Department of Otolaryngology (Head and Neck Surgery) in the UAMS College of Medicine. He practices at Arkansas Children’s Hospital (ACH), an affiliate of UAMS.
UAMS Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson, M.D.; John P. Shock, M.D., interim dean of the UAMS College of Medicine; James Suen, M.D., chair of the Department of Otolaryngology; and Jonathan Bates, M.D., president of ACH, presided at the investiture ceremony Oct. 29.
Several of Dr. Waner’s colleagues spoke admiringly of him: Dr. Suen; Linda Brodsky, M.D., chief of pediatric otolaryngology at The Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y.; and Martin C. Mihm, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.P., professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Waner is internationally known for his treatment of vascular lesions of the head and neck. He has been published widely in scholarly medical journals and has taught courses throughout the world in the use of lasers in surgery. He is active in the American Society for Laser Medicine Surgery and has been on its governing board. He has been involved in the development of several laser devices and holds several patents. |

A native of South Africa, Dr. Waner received his medical training at the University of Witwatersrand Medical School in Johannesburg, South Africa. He conducted research at the University of Cincinnati and was on the faculty of the University of Sydney in Australia before accepting a position at UAMS.
Being named the holder of an endowed chair is one of the highest honors in academia. In the UAMS College of Medicine, an endowed chair indicates an individual’s lasting commitment, dedication, and performance.
