Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease, affecting approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States, which causes the body to produce excessive mucus. It can have a variety of symptoms including a persistent cough.

Respiratory therapists in the College of Health Related Professions (CHRP) at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences use a device called a Vest Airway Clearance System to help patients expel mucus from their lungs. Erna Boone, M.E., R.R.T., chair of CHRP’s Department of Respiratory Care, and Heather Neal-Rice, B.S., R.R.T., will discuss the treatment and the field of respiratory care on Here’s to Your Health.
