Robert Brent, M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc. (Hon), spoke to students in the 10th Block Course on April 13, at the Fred C. Smith Auditorium in the Jackson T. Stephens Spine Center and Neurosciences Institute. Brent was a guest lecturer in the required senior course and presented two lectures to the students.

Brent is a Distinguished Professor, and the Louis and Bess Stein Professor of Pediatrics, Radiology and Pathology at the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, Pa. He is also chairman emeritus of pediatrics and director of the Clinical and Environmental Teratology Laboratories at the DuPont Hospital for Children in Wilmington, Del.  Brent has presented 28 endowed lectures and has been invited to over 27 countries as a visiting lecturer and consultant.

In his lecture, “Medicine: An Excuse from Living,” Brent explained the importance of maintaining a balance between a professional and personal life. He stressed how the two directly correlate with each other and how an unhealthy personal life can affect one’s professional practice. Brent’s second lecture to the students addressed issues facing law and medicine, such as malpractice.

The required 10th Block Course is the final block of a student’s tenure as a medical school student. The 10th Block Course curriculum provides students with education and resources for the business practicalities that are encountered in the medical practice.
