Family Medicine Department Gives Arthritis Update via ITV Network
The Department of Family and Community Medicine in the UAMS College of Medicine recently conducted a successful two-day course on arthritis treatment for healthcare professionals around the state, using television hook-ups at hospitals and Area Health Education Centers.

OCT. 11, 2001 | The Department of Family and Community Medicine in the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) recently conducted a successful two-day course on arthritis treatment for health care professionals around the state, using television hook-ups at hospitals and area health education centers.


UAMS broadcast the educational programs over its Interactive Video Network to 115 participants who attended each of the programs at 25 sites across Arkansas. Doctors, pharmacists, nurses, and other health care professionals attended. The programs were on Fri., Sept. 14, and Fri., Sept. 21. (The number of participants and sites varied slightly on the two days.)

Eleanor A. Lipsmeyer, M.D., professor of medicine in the UAMS College of Medicine, presented “An Update on Osteoarthritis.” Sherry M. Myatt, P.D., BCPS, an assistant professor of pharmacy practice in the UAMS College of Pharmacy, presented “Issues in Drug Treatment of Arthritis.”

Geoffrey Goldsmith, M.D., chairman of the Department of Family and Community Medicine, chaired the course. Mary S. Lindsey, MSW, director of continuing medical education for the department, was the course director. Steven Strode, M.D., M.Ed., David Bourne, M.D., M.P.H., and Elton Cleveland, M.D., were course medical directors. The Office of Continuing Medical Education provided support. The Arkansas chapter of the Arthritis Foundation was a co-sponsor of the course.

Pharmacia provided financial support for the telemedicine course.
