MAY 7, 2004 | Delta Dental of Arkansas, a dental benefits company, gave $17,000 today to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences for a scholarship to the Department of Dental Hygiene in the College of Health Related Professions

The department will use the gift to create the Delta Dental Endowed Dental Hygiene Scholarship, to be given annually to a financially needy student beginning May 2005. Scholarship applicants must be a junior in the program, have a minimum 3.5 grade point average and display leadership and professionalism.

“Delta Dental has always been very supportive of our program,” said Susan Long, R.D.H., Ed.D., interim chairman of the department.  “We appreciate their generosity and their dedication to helping uninsured Arkansans who don’t have access to dental care.”

Ed Choate, CEO of Delta Dental of Arkansas, presented the gift to Long. Others from the College of Health Related Professions attending the presentation were Dean Ronald H. Winters, Ph.D.; Patricia K. Monoson, Ph.D., associate dean of academic and student affairs; Michael Anders, M.P.H., R.R.T., director of student affairs; and four dental hygiene students.

“We are so happy that UAMS applied for this scholarship, and we are thrilled to be a part of this,” Choate said.

“Yes, and we want to attract the best students to our program regardless of their economic situation,” Winters said.

Last year, Delta Dental gave $30,000 to the Dental Hygiene program. The department used the money to purchase four dental chairs and replace a panoramic radiograph machine.
