Dr. Linda Hodges, dean of the UAMS College of Nursing, has dedicated her life to caring for patients and teaching others to do the same. It wasn’t until she was diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2005 that she fully came to understand the challenges of facing a life-threatening disease.

"When you become a patient, you’re not in control anymore,” she said. Hodges credits the strong support of her husband, family and friends for pulling her through, along with the care of UAMS breast cancer surgeon Dr. Kent Westbrook, oncologist Dr. Laura Hutchins and the staff at the Central Arkansas Radiation Therapy Institute (CARTI) located on the UAMS campus. Hodges also turned to her love of creative writing as an outlet for her emotions.

She has written eight essays on various topics related to her illness, treatment and recovery and plans to write more. “Creative writing is a form of therapy for me,” she said.
