JUNE 3, 2005 | When you do a good job, you get a pat on the back. Janie Lowe, the director of volunteer services for the Arkansas Cancer Research Center (ACRC) at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) recently received back-to-back pats.

On April 29, Lowe was notified that she will receive the Junior League of Little Rock Sustainer of the Year Award and on April 30, she was named 2005 Coordinator of the Year by the Arkansas Volunteer Coordinator’s Association.

“It was such a surprise. I had no idea,” Lowe said after receiving the awards.

“I love what I do and I love working with the volunteers,” Lowe said of the 14 years she has been involved with the ACRC. “I didn’t come here looking for a career.”

The Junior League of Little Rock announced Lowe’s award during the sustainer’s luncheon. She will receive the award at a later meeting. Lowe was nominated by Linda A. Deloney, Ed.D., residency and fellowship education coordinator/instructor in the UAMS College of Medicine’s Department of Radiology and assistant professor, in the UAMS College of Health Related Professions’ Department of Imaging and Radiation Sciences. A sustainer is a Junior League member who has been involved for a significant amount of time.

Lowe then traveled to Fort Smith, her hometown, to receive an award from the Arkansas Volunteer Coordinator’s Association. She said the trip was very special because her 88-year-old father and sister were able to attend. Robin Dean, coordinator of the ACRC Auxiliary Cancer Support Center, nominated her for the award.

Dean said of Lowe in her nomination letter, “Janie is the glue that holds all the parts of this organization together. Her incredible leadership has enabled us to achieve goals that have enhanced the lives of untold numbers of cancer patients and enriched the lives of the volunteers in the process.”
