JAN. 8, 2004 | Ashley Keener knows what it means to keep a promise. Last year, the 15-year-old made a promise to her mother, who was struggling with breast cancer, that she would run in the Race for the Cure. Unfortunately, her mother didn’t live long enough to see that pledge carried out. Her mother died at age 49 on Oct. 4, 2003, the morning of the race. But that didn’t stop Ashley – she kept her promise and ran in the race anyway.

Erin Beth Davis Hays returned to Batesville and White River Medical Center to become the first clinical pharmacy resident at the hospital. MAY 3, 2004 | It was the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon – enjoying delicious food prepared by some of Little Rock’s finest chefs and touring four beautiful homes in the Sologne area of Chenal Valley as the Arkansas Cancer Research Center (ACRC) Auxiliary held its annual Cooks Tour fund-raiser, April 25.
Proceeds from this year’s Cooks Tour, expected to total more than $50,000, will go to benefit the UAMS Family Home and the ACRC Auxiliary Cancer Support Center as well as to fund projects at the ACRC to benefit patients.
A Patron’s Gala cocktail buffet hosted by Cindy and Chip Murphy at their Edgehill home on Friday evening was an elegant preview of the weekend. Guests enjoying the Murphys’ hospitality were able to bid on silent and live auction items as they enjoyed fine cuisine and music. “We are very grateful to Cindy and Chip Murphy, not only for opening their home and their hearts to the ACRC and Cooks Tour this year, but for the support and leadership they have shared with us at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) for many years,” said James Y. Suen, M.D., director of the ACRC and professor and chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology in the College of Medicine at UAMS.
Special tribute was paid at the Patron’s Gala to Rhonda Henry-Tillman, M.D., a breast cancer surgeon and director of cancer control outreach at the ACRC, who was presented with the ACRC Auxiliary’s Distinguished Honoree award in recognition of her leadership.
More than 550 people took the Cooks Tour on Sunday afternoon getting some home decorating ideas while touring four residences on Sologne Circle. Those graciously opening their homes for the fund-raiser were Cindy and Gene Osment; Tina and Haitham Alley; Kelly and John Hammer; and Debbie and John Rees. Chefs donating their time and talents to delight the palates of those on the tour included executive chefs Mark Abernathy of Loca Luna and Bene Vita; Evette Brady of 1620; Peter Brave of Brave New Restaurant; and Michael Selig of Vermillion Bistro and Vermillion Water Grille.
