Diana Lynn Woods, Ph.D., is the first John A. Hartford Foundation scholar to join the College of Nursing at UAMS. As the first post-doctoral scholar in the college, she will conduct research funded by the foundation, which recently established a Geriatric Center for Nursing Excellence (GCNE) at UAMS with funds from an earlier grant.

ACCOLADES
Carlos P. Cruz, M.D., recently joined the Vascular Surgery Division in the Department of Surgery as an assistant professor. He earned his medical degree at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. Afterward, Dr. Cruz completed a general surgery residency at Easton Hospital in Easton, Pa., and a vascular surgery fellowship at UAMS.
Martha Doughty, R.N., a UAMS employee for six years and nurse on 4C, has been named nurse of the month for August. Jennifer White, R.N., a UAMS employee for three years and nurse at the General Clinical Research Center located at the VA, has been selected nurse of the month for September.
Lou Ann Eads, M.D., a geriatric psychiatrist, has joined the Donald W. Reynolds Department of Geriatrics as assistant professor of psychiatry. Dr. Eads recently completed a fellowship at the University of St. Louis. She will teach fellows, residents and medical students.
The Department of Dermatology welcomes Genevieve Fortier-Riberdy, M.D., as an assistant professor. At the University of Montreal, she received her medical degree and completed a residency in dermatology. Dr. Fortier-Riberdy also did one year of residency training in internal medicine at the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec, Canada.
Daniel E. Galvin, D.O., recently joined the Surgical Oncology Division in the Department of Surgery as an assistant professor. He is a graduate of the Oklahoma State University School of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Tulsa. Dr. Galvin also completed a general surgery residency at Cabrini Medical Center/New York Medical College and a surgical critical care fellowship at North Shore University Hospital/Cornell University in New York. Before working at UAMS Medical Center, he served as the director of surgical critical care at Cabrini Medical Center and an assistant clinical professor of surgery in the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.
Naim I. Haddad, M.D., has joined the Department of Neurology as an assistant professor. He received his medical degree from St. Joseph University in Beirut, Lebanon. At the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn, Dr. Haddad completed an internal medicine internship and a neurology residency. Most recently, he served an epilepsy/EEG fellowship at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and New York Hospital/Cornell University.
Richard Jacobs, M.D., chief of pediatric infectious diseases at ACH, has been appointed to serve on the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, a panel of 15 medical experts who guide the National Immunization Program of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The committee makes recommendations for the safe use of vaccines, including appropriate dosage, frequency of vaccines and possible reactions in children and adults.
The Department of Dermatology welcomes Manish Khanna, M.D., as an instructor. At McGill University in Montreal, he earned his medical degree and completed a residency in dermatology. Dr. Khanna also did one year of postgraduate training in pediatrics at the University of Toronto.
Michael Mackey, M.D., has been named president-elect of the Southern Medical Association for the 2001-2002 term. Dr. Mackey will be installed as president of the association in November 2002 at the end of the annual meeting to be held in Washington, D.C. He is the fourth Arkansan to hold this office since the Association was founded in 1906. Mackey, longtime nephrologist in Jonesboro, is the director of the AHEC there. He is board certified in both internal medicine and nephrology and has practiced nephrology in Jonesboro at the Northeast Arkansas Clinic since 1978.
Nikos Papanikolaou, Ph.D., recently joined the Department of Radiation Oncology as an associate professor and the chief of medical physics. He has developed a 3-D treatment planning program and has clinical experience in therapeutic radiology, including IMRT (intensity-modulated radiation therapy) planning and delivery, intraoperative radiotherapy, stereotactic radiotherapy, brachytherapy and dosimetry. Dr. Papanikolaou received his doctorate in medical physics from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Prior to working at UAMS Medical Center, he served as an associate professor and the director of the Radiotherapy Medical Physics Postdoctoral/Residency Program at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.
The Department of Neurology and the Donald W. Reynolds Department of Geriatrics welcome Mark A. Pippenger, M.D., as an assistant professor. He earned his medical degree and completed a residency in neurology at UAMS. Dr. Pippenger also recently served a fellowship in behavioral neurology and dementia at the University of California at Los Angeles.
Leslie Welch Taylor has joined the Central Arkansas Radiation Therapy Institute (CARTI) as vice president for communications and marketing/counseling and resources. Before joining CARTI, Taylor was vice president for corporate communications at Alltel. She was director of public relations for UAMS from 1991 to 1997. CARTI has facilities in Little Rock on the St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center, Baptist Health Center and UAMS campuses.
Albert Reed Thompson, M.D., earned a national award from the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC). Dr. Thompson received the Humanism in Medical Education Award, an honor for which students recently nominated him. The award recognizes a physician faculty member who exemplifies the qualities of a caring and compassionate mentor in the teaching and advising of medical students. Its goal is to reinforce among medical school faculty and students the importance of humanistic qualities in physicians and to enhance the interactions between medical school faculty and students. Thompson has a joint appointment at both UAMS and the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS).
Donald W. Reynolds Center designers, Polk Stanley Yeary Architects, Ltd. and Perkins Eastmans Architects, PC received an Honor Citation from the American Institute of Architects (AIA) for the design of the Donald W. Reynolds Center on Aging building. |
