Virtual Reality in Curricula Will Be Topic
March 4
FEB. 13, 2003 | Virtual reality simulations in
health sciences curricula will be the topic of the next Teaching
Scholars Program Lecture Tuesday, March 4.
Helene M. Hoffman, Ph.D., will lecture on "Virtual
Reality and Next Generation Simulations: Do They Have a Place in
Health Sciences Curricula?" The lecture at 4-5 p.m. in John
E. Pauly Auditorium in Education Building III will be open to
all members of the faculty. One hour of continuing medical
education credit will be available.

Helene M. Hoffman, Ph.D.

Dr. Hoffman is adjunct professor in the Department of Medicine
and Assistant Dean for Curriculum and Educational Computing in
the School of Medicine at the University of California San
Diego. As director of the Office of Educational Computing there,
she leads development, implementation, and evaluation of
technology-based resources and services for the undergraduate
medical curriculum.
Dr. Hoffman’s research activities focus on human learning and
the educational application of new technologies such as virtual
reality. Since 1993, she has been principal investigator on
projects funded by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency
and the Office of Naval Research that have led to the
development of a virtual learning environment called
"Anatomic VisualizeR."
Dr. Hoffman is involved in a wide variety of national and
international educational initiatives. She is on the steering
committee of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)
Group on Information Resources, a founding member of the
California Medical Informatics Consortium (IMED), past chair of
the AAMC Special Interest Group on Computers in Medical
Education, and a member of the AAMC Medical Informatics Task
Force. She is also a Program Committee member of the Medicine
Meets Virtual Reality annual conference and a co-editor of the
conference proceedings (IOS Press).
Dr. Hoffman received her B.S. in physiology at the University of
Buffalo and her Ph.D. in cardiovascular physiology and
pharmacology from the University of California at San Diego (UCSD).
She was an NIH Research Fellow in the UCSD Department of
Pharmacology and the University of Vermont Department of
Physiology and Biophysics. Following her postdoctoral training,
Dr. Hoffman served as Assistant Director of UCSD SOM Tutorial
Program where she began her interest in developing tools for
teaching and learning.
