UAMS’ dedicated cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists and other experts offer the many thousands of Arkansans suffering from heart failure the very best in long-term care. Our advanced treatments and procedures help people with heart failure to live longer, more productive and enjoyable lives. Patients requiring a heart transplant can depend on the continuity of care provided by our heart transplant team and other cardiovascular specialists before, during and after transplantation.
On the Leading Edge
Nearly five million Americans are living with heart failure, and as many as 550,000 new cases are diagnosed each year. Fortunately, new interventions for managing heart failure are helping to reduce mortality and morbidity. UAMS offers many advanced treatments for heart failure, while also providing expert consultation services for physicians across the state.
Our Heart Failure Program provides expert diagnostic services in state-of-the-art facilities. Aggressive outpatient care and education are joined with the latest electrophysiology and surgical treatments. UAMS has offered heart transplantation since 1992.
Outpatient and diagnostic care includes:
• Comprehensive diagnostic services, including cutting- edge echocardiography. UAMS cardiologists direct thorough evaluations of patients, including those with advanced heart failure who may be potential transplant candidates. A multi-disciplinary transplant council
carefully reviews cases for possible listing on the
transplant waiting list.
• Review and maximization of medications, with aggressive use of beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors and other drug therapies.
• Thorough patient education, and convenient access to follow-up information and guidance by phone from a nurse specially trained in heart failure management.
Surgical therapies include:
• Automatic implantable cardiac defibrillators (AICDs) for heart failure patients suffering from heart arrhythmia.
• Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), which provides special pacemakers for the 30 percent of heart failure patients with abnormalities in electrical synchrony.
UNOS Certified
The UAMS Heart Transplant Program is certified by the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), the nonprofit scientific and education organization that administers the nation’s procurement and transplantation network.
