UAMS Medical Center

Charity and Indigent Care

UAMS Medical Center offers medical treatment to all – including patients who are unable to pay or are uninsured – through charity care. Patients who inform the hospital of their inability to pay for services are required to apply for Medicaid at the time treatment is provided. If not approved by Medicaid, patients are evaluated for qualification for charity care under UAMS guidelines. Those included by the guidelines are billed at a discounted rate based on family size and economic status in a range of 20% to 100% of the actual charges.

Both the hospital and the Medical College Physicians Group (MCPG) have agreements with governmental and other third-party payers that provide for reimbursement at amounts different from the established rates. The level of charity and indigent care provided based on charges was approximately $86.1 million for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2000.
