Head Start
The
Head Start Program began in 1965 to serve children from families below 100% of the federal
poverty level. UAMS assumed the Pulaski County Head Start programs in 1998, with 29 sites
located throughout the county.
All staff members are UAMS employees, and the executive
director is Charles Field, M.D, a pediatrician and faculty physician in the UAMS College
of Medicine. Major partners include Little Rock, North Little Rock, Pulaski County School
Districts, Arkansas Cares, UALR, Philander Smith College, Centers for Youth and Families,
Urban League, Centra Hispano, St. Francis House, Katherine's House, Little Rock and
North Little Rock Housing Authorities, Arkansas Department of Health, and Easter Seals.
