Latvian Tuberculosis Officials Visit UAMS

OCT. 16, 2003 | Physicians and tuberculosis specialists from Latvia, a nation of 2.3 million people in eastern Europe, visited the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) last week for assistance on fighting multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis.

UAMS Regional Programs provided technical assistance for operating a medical center of excellence for the Latvian delegation at the request of the U.S. Agency for International Development. The group visited UAMS previously in February. UAMS is providing the assistance with funding from the American International Health Alliance, Inc., in conjunction with the United States Agency for International Development (AID).

Recognizing Latvia’s efforts to fight tuberculosis, the Arkansas chapter of the American Lung Association honored Ambassador
Janis Eichmanis of the Embassy of Latvia in Washington, D.C., at its annual gala in Little Rock Oct. 10.

Ambassador Brian E. Carlson of the Embassy of the United States in Latvia sent official thanks to UAMS Vice Chancellor Charles O. Cranford, D.D.S., M.P.A., for the assistance UAMS has provided to the Latvian Multi-drug Resistant Tuberculosis Center:

”Your work, along with the Centers for Disease Control and the United States Agency for International Development, has been a model for how American assistance projects should work,” Carlson wrote.

The Latvian center was established by the World Health Organization, U.S. Centers for Disease Control, and the U.S. AID.

The lung association also honored Stacie M. Jones, M.D., of the Department of Pediatrics in the UAMS College of Medicine and the Arkansas Children’s Hospital Research Institute, for her research on potential gene therapy for asthma.
