Science is Hot at UAMS Graduate School

AUG. 8, 2003 | Kristen Sterba, Ph.D., has a message for young people who might want to be scientists:

The UAMS Graduate School is the hottest place in
Arkansas and it’s getting hotter.

”A lot of students who are thinking about careers in the sciences don’t realize that UAMS is the leading research university in
Arkansas . One of the ways people measure research activity is by funding from outside sources, and UAMS and its affiliates receive close to $100 million a year in research grants and contracts,” Sterba explains. ”Graduate students in the basic sciences at UAMS get to see firsthand some really incredible discoveries unfolding.”

Dr. Sterba recently completed a doctoral degree in biochemistry and molecular biology at UAMS.

The basic science degree programs at UAMS include anatomy, biochemistry and molecular biology, interdisciplinary toxicology, microbiology/immunology, pathology, pharmacology, pharmaceutical sciences, and physiology/biophysics.

Students can earn master (M.S.) and doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in the basic sciences at UAMS and go on to careers as university teachers and researchers or researchers for private industry or government agencies. Doctoral students get to work alongside faculty members who guide them in planning and completing original research projects.

Students who want to learn more about the
UAMS Graduate School can call Sterba at 501-526-7396 or e-mail her at kmsterba@uams.edu.
