Free Prostate Cancer Screenings Sept. 19 at UAMS

AUG. 7, 2003 | The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) will give free prostate cancer screenings Fri., Sept. 19, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

The screenings will be on the sixth floor of the Arkansas Cancer Research Center (ACRC) (See map.) at UAMS in Little Rock. Preregistration for the screenings is not required. For more information, call 501-296-1545 or 501-296-1505, ext. 1110.

"One of the smartest health decisions that men can make is to be screened for prostate cancer," says Graham F. Greene, M.D., an associate professor of urology in the UAMS College of Medicine and the head of genitourinary oncology at ACRC where he sees patients in the Urology Oncology Clinic. "Routine screening can catch the disease in its early stages when it is confined to the prostate gland and, therefore, more likely to be cured by immediate treatment."

Each screening will include a medical history, a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and a digital rectal exam (DRE). Participants will be notified of their test results by mail. Patient education materials on prostate cancer will be available at the screenings.

"Having this screening at UAMS also gives men in Arkansas the opportunity to be involved in ongoing research for the prevention of prostate cancer," Dr. Greene explains. "The knowledge we gain from this research may enable us to improve prostate cancer outcomes."

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in American men who are 50 and older. Current American Cancer Society recommendations state that all men who are 50 to 75 years old should be screened annually for prostate cancer, with black men and those with a family history of the disease starting their yearly screenings at age 45.
