Betty Jo Ward Invites All to Join UAMS Medical Center Auxiliary

JULY 14, 2003 | A 25-year member of the UAMS Medical Center Auxiliary has finally taken her turn as president and is urging everyone at UAMS to join her in helping the hospital.

Betty Jo Ward, who is well-known to patients’ families for her gracious assistance in the UAMS Gift Shop every Friday and to everyone else at UAMS as the wife of Chancellor Emeritus Harry P. Ward, M.D., took office as president of the auxiliary in May.

”We’re not asking everyone to work at our fundraisers. But with more membership dues, we can cover our operating costs and contribute every dollar we raise to the hospital,” Mrs. Ward explains. She encourages staff and faculty members, men and women, to join the auxiliary.

The auxiliary’s other board members are Jane Hohn, vice-president elect; Sue Wicker, vice-president for membership; Betty Moore, vice-president for programs; Jerry McMillan, vice-president for gift shop operations; Jane Liem, secretary; Sandra Pudinas, treasurer; Tish Miller, parliamentarian; Dorothy Barkley, chair, Christmas Tree Lights Committee; Bruce McEntire, Ginger Wilson, and Mary Cantrell, Special Events Committee; Mary Cantrell, Aromatique™ Sale Committee; Gerry Rayford, liaison to ACRC; Carolyn McCone, liaison to Donald W. Reynolds Center on Aging; and Jane Texter, liaison to AHAA.

Mrs. Ward emphasizes that the auxiliary donates abut $60,000 each year for special needs in the hospital – from a fund for transportation, food, and other needs for patients to a $14,000 treatment table for the new Jackson T. Stephens Spine and Neurosciences Institute at UAMS.

The auxiliary recently completed a pledge of $130,000 to the UAMS Family Home and ACRC Auxiliary Cancer Support. In recent years, it also has contributed $30,000 to promising research in the Arkansas Cancer Research Center at UAMS on a therapeutic vaccine for cervical and uterine cancer and $8,500 for stereo music for patients during MRI procedures – among many other projects.

The board is planning the auxiliary’s traditional winter sale for UAMS employees of donated merchandise from Aromatique™ and a garden party in April. The UAMS Gift Shop is another auxiliary fundraising activity.

Memberships in the auxiliary cost from $10 to $25 per year. Download a membership form and mail to:
