College Merges Departments of Medical Technology, Cytotechnology

JUNE 30, 2003 | The Departments of Medical Technology and Cytotechnology in the College of Health Related Professions (CHRP) will consolidate under a new title, the department of Laboratory Sciences. The change takes effect July 1.

The consolidation will not change either department. “We will be making every possible effort to ensure that their respective identities are not submerged as a result of this administrative change,” Dean Ronald H. Winters, Ph.D., said.

The current chair of the Department of Medical Technology, Martha J. Lake, Ed.D., will continue to direct that program while also serving as chair of the new department. The current chair of the Department of Cytotechnology, Wanda Culbreth, will continue to direct that program.

UAMS offers the professional coursework in medical technology necessary to take the national certification examinations. Students can choose full- or part-time tracks. The medical technologist (MT) is able to make definitive analyses on blood and other body fluids to provide data for diagnosis and treatment.

The Cytotechnology Program offers a Bachelor of Science degree in conjunction with the Department of Pathology in the College of Medicine, and prepares the graduate to take the national registry examination in cytotechnology. Cytotechnologists (CT) use a microscope and specific criteria to decide whether a cell sample is normal, inflamed, premalignant or malignant.

The move follows an earlier merger of the Departments of Respiratory Care and Surgical Technology into the department of Respiratory and Surgical Technologies. After July 1, CHRP will have 11 departments. The other nine are the Departments of Audiology and Speech Pathology, Dental Hygiene, Dietetics and Nutrition, Emergency Medical Sciences, Health Information Management, Nuclear Medicine Technology, Ophthalmic Technologies, Radiation Therapy, and Radiologic Technology.
