John P. Shock, M.D., Receives Caduceus Club Distinguished Faculty Award

JUNE 27, 2003 | The Arkansas Caduceus Club  has honored John P. Shock, M.D., with its 2003 Distinguished Faculty Award.

Dr. Shock is professor and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology in the College of Medicine at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), executive vice chancellor of UAMS, and director of the Harvey and Bernice Jones Eye Institute.

”He performs much the same service for UAMS as the sun does for the planet earth: he radiates energy,” Executive Associate Dean Richard P. Wheeler, M.D., said of Dr. Shock.

The Distinguished Faculty Award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the health of all people through teaching, basic research, clinical research, or health services administration and has demonstrated the high principles of the medical profession.

Dr. Shock joined the college as chair of ophthalmology in 1979, when there was only one other full-time faculty member in that department. He has expanded the department to 19 full-time faculty members and has increased patient visits from about 6,000 annually to almost 20,000. He also established the Jones Eye Institute.

From October 2000 to January 2002, Dr. Shock was interim dean of the College of Medicine. Chancellor I. Dodd Wilson, M.D., subsequently appointed him executive vice chancellor; in that role, Dr. Shock has been responsible for several important projects.

Dr. Shock is a graduate of West Point and Duke University School of Medicine. He completed an ophthalmology residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and a fellowship in retinal surgery at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami.
