Dr. Isador H. Lieberman,
B.Sc., M.D., F.R.C.S. (C), an orthopaedic
and spinal surgeon with the Cleveland
Clinic Foundation, will take part in a
special grand rounds presentation to be
held June 25 at the Arkansas Cancer
Research Center. The presentation,
scheduled for 8 a.m. in the Walton
Auditorium on the 10th floor of
the ACRC, will focus on kyphoplasty and
vertebroplasty as critical adjuncts in the
management of multiple myeloma.
Dr. Lieberman gave a
similar presentation at the 9th annual
International Workshop on Multiple Myeloma,
held in May in Salamanca, Spain. Dr. Bart
Barlogie, M.D.,
Ph.D., director of UAMS' Myeloma Institute
for Research and Therapy, invited Dr.
Lieberman to visit UAMS to discuss his
work after hearing him speak at the
conference in Spain.
Kyphoplasty and
vertebroplasty are two relatively new
procedures designed to treat spinal
compression fractures from osteoporosis,
tumors and traumatic injury. They involve
the injection of cement-like material into
a collapsing vertebral body, reinforcing
the fractured area and preventing further
vertebral collapse.
Dr. Lieberman is recognized
nationally and internationally for his contributions to minimally
invasive/endoscopic spinal surgery and for
his contributions to the
treatment of osteoporotic vertebral
compression fractures. Through
research, clinical trials and surgical
innovation, he has been instrumental in
advancing the use of minimally invasive
spinal surgery techniques to treat
herniated discs, lumbar degenerative
disorders, osteoporotic vertebral
compression fractures, and scoliosis.
The grand rounds will
include a continental breakfast beginning
at 7:45 a.m. All interested faculty and
staff are invited to attend the
presentation. For more information, please contact
Bonnie Jenkins at 526-2873.
